Southwestern Law School began in the fall of 1911, when a small group of unswayable students first met with a tutor in the old Union Oil towers in downtown Los Angeles. This collective, known as SouthwesternHigherof Law, was organized as a nonprofit, educational institution by John J. Schumacher. His dream was to provide legal education opportunities for qualified students who might not otherwise be given the endangerment to pursue such a degree. Strong wonk and scholarly ambitions moreover accompanied the founding - Southwestern was the first law school in Southern California to use the Harvard specimen method of instruction, and established a law review at a time when most schools emphasized inward the profession over scholarship. From the outset, Southwestern urgently encouraged the enrollment of women and minorities. The law school's first graduate was Betty Trier Berry, who became the first woman in the United States to serve in a public defender's office. Numerous other Southwestern alumni were trailblazers in the profession, such as: Hon. Tom Bradley, the first African American Mayor of Los Angeles who served an unprecedented five terms; Hon. Ronald Lew, the first Chinese American district magistrate judge in the continental United States; Hon. Arleigh Woods, the first sexuality African-American appellate magistrate justice; and Hon. Vaino Spencer, the first sexuality African American judge in California; and Hon. Frances Muñoz, the first Latina judge in California.  As the second law school in the Los Angeles area, Southwestern experienced firsthand growth, prompting the need for larger and larger campuses. By 1915, the higher had expanded to include a number of other disciplines (commerce, written and finance), received a university charter, and moved to a larger location on Spring Street.Increasinglythan 100 students were enrolled by 1920, and three years later the school began construction on the South Hill Street campus, which was to serve as the primary site for the next five decades. During this early period, an zippy student soul established a number of publications, several fraternities and sororities, a debate squad (that captured the 1927 Southern California Public Speaking Conference championship), several sturdy teams, and the Southwestern Alumni Association. Through the 1930s and World War II, the school's enrollment declined only to resurge as returning veterans came when to well-constructed their education. While the law school once then ripened into a strong and popular department, the last of the other educational departments were discontinued as similar programs became increasingly wieldy through the then tuition-free polity colleges.  In the 1970s, Southwestern gained full warrant from the American Bar Association, was awarded membership in the Association of American Law Schools, and established the first two-year J.D. program (SCALE®) in the country. During that era, the law school moreover moved west from downtown to larger, increasingly modern facilities in the WilshirePart-waydistrict of Los Angeles. The pursuit decade, the law school widow a fourth J.D. program, PLEAS, one of the first part-time day options for students with child or statesman superintendency responsibilities; established summer upalong programs in Argentina, Canada, England and Mexico; and ripened one of the most wide-stretching externship programs in the country.  In 1994, Southwestern took a giant leap into the future with the vanquishment of the neighboring Bullocks Wilshire Building. This art deco landmark with an illustrious past widow 230,000 square feet of towers space to Southwestern's facilities and provided the opportunity to create a trappy campus encompassing nearly two municipality blocks. Over the ensuing ten years, the law school's $29 million campus expansion included preservation, restoration, remodeling and construction of over 410,000 square feet of improvements including the Leigh H. Taylor Law Library; the Julian C. Dixon Courtroom and Advocacy Center; state-of-the-art classrooms and sense offices; transformation of Westmoreland Avenue into a park-like, welcomingPolityPromenade and Student Commons; and substantial remodeling and modernization of the Westmoreland Building. As a result, Southwestern now has one of the most architecturally significant and technologically wide law school environments in the nation. This unique setting helps future lawyers maintain a broader perspective, encourages self-sustaining thinking, and inspires creativity.  The expansion of Southwestern's physical facilities provided increasingly constructive space for learning, research, study, informal gatherings, cocurricular and recreational activities, networking with members of the profession, and interaction with distinguished visitors. In recent years, the sense has focused on the minutiae of innovative courses of study, nationally recognized curricular innovations and wonk support programs, topnotch cocurricular programs, joint stratum programs with The Drucker Graduate School of Management and California State University, Dominguez Hills and two new LL.M. stratum programs (Entertainment and Media Law and Individualized Studies). Emphasis has moreover unfurled in public interest and pro bono opportunities, including three new clinical programs and public interest grant and fellowship programs; the enhancement of lawyering skills and professionalism; and the recruitment of outstanding legal scholars and young wonk stars to the faculty.  As the law school celebrates its 100th anniversary, the Southwestern polity looks forward to an heady second century benefiting from a strong institutional legacy, a wholesale and successful alumni base, a talented and defended faculty, a location at the part-way of one of the most important legal markets in the United States, and a remarkable physical facility that justifies the splendid tag line - "A landmark in legal education."   Share: facebook twitter Pinterest emailIncreasinglyAbout Southwestern ABA Required Disclosures About Southwestern Mission History of Southwestern Consumer Information Board of Trustees Administrators Website Privacy Statement Website Terms of Use Copyright Infringement Website Accessibility Nondiscrimination Policy Sexual Misconduct PolicyPolityServices Media Room Check SW Email WebAdvisor Employment at SW Apply Now Donate Follow Southwestern: Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Livestream Vimeo Join our mailing list: Email Address Secondary Navigation ABA Required Disclosures About Southwestern Mission History of Southwestern Consumer Information Board of Trustees Administrators Website Privacy Statement Website Terms of Use Copyright Infringement Website Accessibility Nondiscrimination Policy Sexual Misconduct PolicyPolityServices Media Room Publications Media Images Media Guide Videos Check SW Email WebAdvisor Employment at SWSenseSupport Services Assistant SOS Office Assistant Student Services Assistant - Administrative Services Office Site Map / Quick Links Admissions & Financial Aid Overview Admissions - J.D.
